What Is DM in Cough Medicines?

DM stands for dextromethorphan, which is a common cough suppressant that belongs to a class of medications called antitussives.1 It works by calming your cough reflex and decreasing the amount of activity in the section of your brain that causes coughing.2,3

Dextromethorphan can be taken by adults and children over 6 years of age.1 Depending on individual medications, the amount of dextromethorphan can vary, but adults are generally recommended to take a 10-20mg dose by mouth every 4 hours, up to a maximum daily dose of 120 mg.1 Another option is to take a 30mg dose every 4 to 6 hours. Children with coughs between 6 to 11 years of age shouldn’t take more than 60mg of dextromethorphan a day. Be sure to deliver the proper dose to your children and have them take it either with food or on an empty stomach.1

Side Effects and Potential Interactions with Dextromethorphan

While it’s generally safe when taking the proper dose to treat a cough, dextromethorphan can interact with certain medications, including those treating depression and anxiety.2 Taking this medication can also come with minor side effects, including:3

  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • fatigue
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • stomach pain

Many of these symptoms don’t require medical attention, but if these symptoms are severe or do not go away after a while, contact your doctor or medical professional.2,3 In addition, some allergic reactions that are more serious include skin rash, itching, hives or if you feel swelling on your lips, tongue or throat.2

Dextromethorphan can come in many forms, such as capsules, liquids and even chewable tablets such as Robitussin Soft Chews Nighttime DM and Robitussin Soft Chews Long-Acting Cough.3 These new medications can provide long-lasting relief from coughs in a convenient berry-tasting chewable.

If your cough is milder or combined with a sore throat, try Robitussin Elderberry Medi-Soothers. Providing up to 4 hours of cough relief, these liquid-filled lozenges contain effective cough suppressants and the taste of real elderberries.
